You’ve decided to redecorate and need to get rid of your old furniture before you have enough room for the
new pieces. Or you’re downsizing and need to get rid of a few things. Whatever the reason, you have extra
furniture and would like to donate it to a worthy organization. How do you go about it?

Take a good look at the furniture and give an honest appraisal.

• Is it clean?
• Does it show signs of wear?
• Is it torn?
• Does it have claw marks or chew marks?
• Does it smell like your animals?
• Would you by it at a resale shop?

The last question is really the key. If you wouldn’t buy it because of its condition, it’s likely that no one else
would either. People who shop in thrift stores don’t expect the merchandise to be perfect. But it does need to
be clean and free from obvious damage.

Make sure that your donation is an item that the non-profit will be able to accept.

Most non-profits have a list of things that they really need, but that doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t
welcome what you have to give. On the other hand, there are certain things that almost no one accepts
because of liability issues.

• Cribs
• Mattresses/box springs, including waterbed mattresses and waterbed frames
• Infant furniture that does not meet the current safety standards of the US Consumer Product Safety
Commission.
• Any item that has been recalled

If a list of excluded items isn’t on a company’s website, call them if you have questions. They would much rather tell you ahead of time than a need to turn you away at the door.

Note: Some organizations will only accept furniture donations that can be handled by one person.

Decide where you want to donate.

There are many organizations who would be happy to receive your donation. You can ask your friends or do
a little research on the Internet to decide which is right for you. There are national non-profits and local ones.
Often a donation to a national organization will be used locally. If that is important to you, be sure to ask.

Note: As a general rule, the national organization will arrange a pick-up. Local organizations often do not have the means to do so National Organizations.
